What are candles made of?

We sell raw materials such as beeswax, paraffin, stearin, candle colours, wax foils and wicks to private individuals, schools, homes and public candle-dipping centres. We would be happy to send you our "Candle-dipping" brochure as a PDF file.

Beeswax

Beeswax is particularly popular as a raw material for the production of ointments and creams. Beeswax candles are also valued for their fragrance and natural colour. We source our raw beeswax from Europe, Africa and South America. Our customers value strong and lightfast colours and we offer beeswax in pastilles and bars. You can also buy bleached beeswax from us. Did you know that the beekeeper's harvest is only around 500-800 grams per colony per year? Even beekeepers believed for a long time that the worker bees collect the beeswax on the fly like pollen and carry it into the hive. It was not until the 18th century that it was discovered that bees produce their own wax in small discs. Through contact with the pollen, the originally snow-white wax gradually turns yellow and becomes flavoured.

Candle wax - composition wax

Composition waxes are mixtures of different types of waxes. For candle dipping and moulding, we recommend our composition wax made of 80% paraffin and 20% stearin with an addition of micro wax. You can obtain composition wax from us in grooved bars or pastilles.

Paraffin wax

Today, paraffin wax is mainly obtained from crude oil. Paraffin can be processed as a pure raw material or with an admixture of stearin. As paraffin wax contracts strongly when it solidifies, it is ideal for candle moulding and is also often used for the final finish of layered candles thanks to its shine and transparency. We offer paraffin wax with different melting points in pastilles and tablets.

Stearin

Stearin is obtained from animal fats and vegetable oils. Stearin gives candles greater strength and reduces the transparency of paraffin. Due to its hardness, pure stearin candles can only be produced using the moulding process. You can obtain vegetable stearin from palm and coconut oil from us in Schuppen.

Wicks

Wicks are woven from cotton yarns. A distinction is made between flat and round wicks, both of which are suitable for candles made from paraffin/stearin compositions. For beeswax, however, we recommend using only round wicks. The choice of wick is of great importance for the burning quality of the candles. The wick of a candle is matched to the candle diameter, the colours used and the respective manufacturing process.

Candle colours

Most hobby candle makers prefer solid-coloured candles because they can be cut to create artistic, unique pieces. Pigment dyes are used for candles with a coloured finish. Unfortunately, they cannot be used for colouring through, as the pigments would clog the wick and make it impossible to add wax. However, fat-soluble colours are available for colouring through candles. Their lightfastness cannot be guaranteed over a longer period of time.

Micro waxes

Like paraffin, micro waxes are also obtained from crude oil. The melting point and mouldability of a wax can be changed by adding micro waxes.

Gel wax

Gel wax consists of paraffin, vaseline and other oils that are solidified with the help of additives. At room temperature, the material is soft and jelly-like. Candles made from gel wax burn about five times longer than candles made from normal paraffin. The gel wax is non-toxic and can be safely given to children. You can purchase gel wax from us in plastic buckets of 5 kg or tins of 900 g.

Effect wax

Effect waxes enhance the surface of candles. Children are particularly happy when snowflakes or ice crystals appear on the surface of the candle after dipping it in the effect wax. We offer effect wax in three variations: Ice crystal, snowflakes and velvet.
